Pace of Play
Our pace of play policy as defined in our local rules is:
Model Local Rule K-1 Maximum Time for All or Part of Round If a group finishes the round more than the starting interval behind the group in front and 4 hours 10 minutes from the time of starting, all players in the group are subject to a penalty of one stroke.
We would also remind members…
Good Golf Etiquette states players should play at a good pace. It is a group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group. Where a group has not lost a clear hole, but it is apparent that the group behind can play faster, it should invite the faster group to play through.
“Ready golf” is a commonly used term which indicates that players should play when they are ready to do so, rather than adhering strictly to the “farthest from the hole plays first” stipulation in the Rules of Golf.
Members should also consider this advice from the Drop Zone Email newsletter
Given that pace of play is such a contentious and sensitive topic, there is a small thing you can do to help with other players in the group.
It is important to keep an eye on the play of other players in the group. This can assist with ball searches, which helps with pace of play. Especially, if your tee shot is directly into the sun, different people should stand in slightly different spots to ensure the best chance of determining where the tee shot has gone. Sometimes you think you have hit your ball straight down the middle of the fairway, and it is nowhere to be found.
If a player is playing from among trees, when they have no visibility of where their ball may head, it is important for at least one other person to stop what they are doing and keep an eye for the ball to exit the trees.
Always in the interest of pace of play, if you believe your ball could be lost outside a penalty area, announce and play a provisional ball in accordance with Rule 18.3.
Model Local Rule A-4 [New definition in place from Sunday 5th of May 2024]
- During the play of the 14th hole, the left-hand side of the hole as defined by the White Stakes is out of bounds.
- During the play of the 15th hole, the left-hand side of the holes as defined by the White Stakes is out of bounds.
- These stakes are boundary objects during the play of both holes, and there is no free relief.
- For all other holes, they are immovable obstructions.

Maximum Score is a form of stroke play where a player’s score for a hole is capped at a maximum number of strokes as set by the Committee at Greenacres to 5 over par.
To help pace of play, players are encouraged to stop playing a hole when their score has reached the maximum, as per the table below. If you stop playing the hole or do not complete it then the score to be recorded on your card is in the hole score column.
| Par of Hole | Maximum Strokes | Hole Score |
| 3 | 8 | 8 |
| 4 | 9 | 9 |
| 5 | 10 | 10 |
New Members
When the course is in acceptable scoring conditions
For members who have never had a WHS handicap, you must submit a required number of nine and/or eighteen cards played over a measured course. Any permutation of nine and eighteen cards may be submitted but must total a minimum of 54 holes. At Greenacres the Men’s measured courses are the full eighteen holes, the front nine and back nine played of the Blue or White tee markers.
As tee markers are rated by gender and not age. Junior Boys can NOT submit cards from the RED tee markers as they have not been rated for male golfers.
For the score cards to be accepted for handicapping.
- You must preregister your intent to submit a score card, by completing the preregistration sheet in the member’s room.
- Please indicate which tees were used and the date the round was played.
- The cards must be signed by a marker who already has an official WHS Handicap.
Cards will be accepted from other courses, provided the round was pre-registered before commencement of play.
Once the required number of cards have been completed, please place them into the Match & Handicap Slot of the cabinet in the members room and brief note of any playing experience. Examples:
- Was a member of X Golf Club Y years ago and played of Z handicap
- I’m member of a society and play X times a year; society handicap is
- I’m just starting to play golf
Until the cards and accompanying information have been submitted and a handicap has been allocated new members can play with another member in any club competition from the competition tees. When your membership payment has been processed the Match & Handicap Committee will enter the score cards into Clubhouse and your initial handicap index will be automatically calculated.
